U.S. is Getting Fatter - Except in Oregon?

The Trust for America's Health has just released its Obesity U.S.A. by State Index. Every state had a raise in their obesity rates, except Oregon. The FatPride Times is based out of Oregon and has to question the methodology used in this research. I have seen things here. Mississippi had the highest rate of obesity, with 29.5 percent of adults classified as obese in 2004. In Colorado, the slimmest state, just 16 percent of adults are obese. Oregon was unchanged at 21 percent.

Beenie Weenie JPG Challenge Winner

Reader Kit has made history on the internet tonight by contributing the first pictures of this fine product before any other reader. The FatPride Times extends thanks and congratulations for her fine effort in this extremely competitive challenge we issued. Unfortunately, we did not really have a prize offered for the winner but we will find someway to reward her victory. Soon, The FPT will be launching a subsite that will be a tribute to Beenie Weenie, stay posted for more info.

Low-Carb 6 Dollar Burger - Ok Now I Get It

Sampling foodstuffs and reporting back upon them is one of the many things the staff here at the FPT headquarters do. However, we are on a limited budget (please see: visit our sponsors links post) and when we often use a two-fer coupon when avauilable to stretch our funds. Last night, we came into possesion of a 2 for the price of 1 coupon for "The Low-Carb 6 Dollar Burger" from Carl's Jr. restaurants. Of course, the 6 dollar burgers actually cost between 4.19 and 4.99 as the name is just a marketing gimmick. Knowing that this premium line of burgers uses only Angus beef we did not think deeply about what we were ordering. What makes this burger low-carb? Well, it does not have a bun. It comes wrapped in huge lettuce leaves, huge as in you could take them off and make a small salad with them. Upon arriving in our food-testing arena we contemplated how to eat them. With the first one, we grabbed two slices of bread, peeled off some layers of the lettuce wrap and went traditional style and it was very tasty. The second one wrapped in foil for later consumption. After awhile we went back for the second one and decided to just mack it with the lettuce wrap. The burger was cold by then and actually was better than the first. So in conclusion, the FatPride Times does endorse this burger, however the proper way to eat these is after they are cold. When they are cold, the parts stay together better and having a lettuce bun doesnt seem so odd after all.

The Internet: Beanie Weenie Free

We at The FatPride Times are huge fans of the classic canned "Beanie Weenie" which is beans and coin sized hot dog slices in a tomato sauce. It comes in cans with the user-friendly pull-top lid. The staff here at FPT has spent the last 48 hours surfing and searching the web for an image of the real thing. There are zero images of this product on the web. Do you know how many images there are of people having sexual relations involving animals on the web. I dont know myself, but I am sure there are countless - yet not one image of Beanie Weenie. Tomorrow we will purchase a can and post the first picture of this classic on the internet. If you would like to prove me incorrect, please send a URL.

Jalapeno Hot Means Hot

The FatPride Times is constantly exploring new foodstuffs to expand our horizons. Yesterday, we tried a product called "Hood's Hot Jalapeno Korn Kurls". Based on all the foods we have tried that are so called 'hot' - we went in with the assumption they would have a little spark of heat. Holy Moses, these little bastards are hotter than anything I have ever tried. After 10 or so, I pounded a soda and still had the burn in my mouth. These guys live up to their claim, and The FatPride Times is pleased to endorse their product.

Quantity Speed Eating: Is It A Sport?

As you probably have noticed the latest round of eating contests has been getting some heavy press. From allheadlinenews.com "Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Japan has got a new speed-eater. The country's champion speed-eater has won his second contest in two days by eating 100 roasted pork buns in 12 minutes in Hong Kong.

Takeru Kobayashi, Japan's new speed-eater champion, ate twice as many buns as the first runner-up, Johnny Wu, who only managed to down 47.

From Mail & Guardian Online - A week after she gorged on bratwurst and grilled-cheese sandwiches, one of the world's top competitive eaters gobbled down 44 lobsters in 12 minutes on Saturday to set a new speed-eating record.

Sonya Thomas, who weighs 44,5kg, humbled her bigger male competitors as she consumed 5,13kg of lobster meat, breaking the old record of 4,43kg she set last year.

I have heard arguments that these contests should be classified as actual 'sports', which The FatPride Times does not endorse. This is not sport by definition. I am not sure what to classify eating contests as, but they are just sideshows or events. Your comments are requested.

Healthy Choice Brand Frozen Product Problems

A reader has sent along a photo of a Healthy Choice frozen dinner that was bought and found to be rancid. In the photo it is still wrapped as the smell was quite pungent. This box was dated best if used by July 27 2006. I have also experienced some nasty Healthy Choice frozen meals, and then pondered why they were on sale for such a low price at that time. Once I purchased a "Budget Gourmet" frozen meal and when I peeled off the lid there was a coupon printed upon it that had expired over a year ago from the date I purchased it. Like the Healthy Choice meal, it was on sale for a very low price. Somethings not right here people.

Bay Shrimp Battle: Safeway easily defeats Albertson's

We at the FatPride Times have been on a weekend long shrimp binge as both Safeway and Albertson's had competing sales going. The Safeway shrimp were far superior, The Albertson's had that funny little twang to them. Something wasn't right with those shrimp. So,. while we have been bagging on Safeway for their filthy, horrid shopping carts, they do deserve some recognition for quality shrimp.

FP's Shrimp Salad Deluxe V2.1

After making up my shrimp salad tonight, I thought a photo would be cool to show you all how good it is. I simply combine shredded lettuce, bay shrimp, chopped purple onion, chopped pepper jack cheese and slap some pasta salad on the side. Easy and pure in the summer.

Nocturnal Eating Syndrome (Sleep-Related Eating)

Last night I had an incident that has caused me much duress and had me researching all morning. I awoke in the kitchen, sitting in a chair as i droppped and broke a glass full of ice and lemonade. I do not recall how I got there. After a few seconds, I came to realize that it was the middle of the night and I had prepared a salad with corn and cheese and a bagel sandwich. I had eaten the salad and was 1/2 wat thru the bagel sandwich (see photo) when i dropped my glass and was awoken. Apparently, this is a known disorder and is considered a parasomnia, and is a rare type of sleepwalking, a disorder of arousal. People with this disorder experience recurrent episodes of eating during sleep, without being aware of what they are doing. Sleep-related eating might occur often enough to result in significant weight gain. Although it can affect all ages and both sexes, it is more common in young women. I will continue my research and report back more info. Be careful people.

Warning: Do Not Eat These Canned Jalapenos

Longtime reader Kit has informed the FP times that the can of jalapeno peppers pictured above is not fit for eating. Kit says: "I shoulda got the ones in the jar I could see, these had like carrots and other parts in it, not the kewl round slices, as these are the lips and assholes of the peppers, like a low grade hot dog" and also "wanna see what your insides look like? eat these and they will come out". People, this is sound advice please follow. FP Times thanks Kit for reporting the problemm and encourages other readers to contact us when they encounter bad foodstuffs so we can inform the community.
